Come and join RTN on a Mediterranean Cruise and visit four of the best cities in Spain, France and Italy.

FANCY A luxurious cruise this year? Why not book on RTN’s exclusive Royal Caribbean cruise, which is being promoted by Gandia Tours and starts in Barcelona on 7th May? This fantastic offer is only available for that week and with prices from 497€ per person, can you afford not to take advantage of it?

BARCELONA

The trip starts at the hotel in Barcelona where you will stay for the first night and have the opportunity to visit Spain’s second largest city. Barcelona is the 16th-most-visited city in the world and the fourth most visited in Europe after Paris, London, and Rome, with several million tourists every year. It was founded as a Roman city and after merging with the Kingdom of Aragon, it became one of the most important cities of the Crown of Aragon.

Besieged several times during its history, Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage and is today an important cultural centre and major tourist destination with the Sagrada Familia, the international symbol of Barcelona; the Nou Camp Stadium, home to Barcelona Football Club; and the Palau de la Música Catalana and Hospital de Sant Pau, both designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and included in the UNESCO Heritage List in 1997 as significant places of interest.

CANNES AND MONTECARLO

The ship set sails on 8th May at 5pm and next morning you will arrive in Cannes, the first stop on your fabulous five night cruise.

Cannes is one of the best-known cities on the French Riviera – a busy tourist destination famous for its luxury shops, restaurants, and hotels. There is an excursion to Montecarlo available from here and whilst in Cannes you can visit La Croisette, the palm tree-lined waterfront avenue best known for its picturesque beaches, restaurants, cafés and boutiques or La Suquet, the old town, which provides a good view of La Croisette, the fortified tower and the Chapel of St Anne as well as Île Sainte-Marguerite, where the legendary ‘Man in the Iron Mask’ was staged.

LIVORNO AND FLORENCE

Next on your trip is the Italian city of Livorno, which is located on the western coast of Tuscany. Excursions to the fabulous city of Florence are available from here and you will have the chance to visit this beautiful and traditional Italian city that retains much of its original town planning and architectural features such as the bridges and narrow lanes.

Known as the ‘cradle of the Renaissance’ for its monuments, churches and buildings, Florence’s best-known attraction is the domed cathedral of the Santa Maria del Fiore, known as The Duomo.

CIVITAVECCHIA AND ROME

Staying in Italy, the final destination on your cruise is Civitavecchia. Translated as ‘ancient town’, Civitavecchia is primarily a sea port on the Tyrrhenian Sea located 80 kilometres from Rome, across the Mignone River.

Excursions to the Italian capital are available from here where you will be able to visit such famous sites as the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and Vatican City (not included in the price). You will then spend Saturday 12th May on the ship sailing back to Barcelona, where you will arrive early on Sunday morning.

Prices are per person, based on a five night cruise in a double cabin and include transport and the hotel in Barcelona.

So, what are you waiting for? Call 966 106 872 now to reserve!

The two biggest companies — Carnival Corporation, the parent of more than a half-dozen lines, including Princess and Costa Cruises, and Royal Caribbean — saw bookings drop by percentages in the midteens in the weeks after the Concordia ran aground off the coast of Isola del Giglio on Jan. 13.

The accident, in which 32 people lost their lives or are presumed dead, led the industry to suspend advertising campaigns temporarily and focus on reassuring cruisers about safety instead of sales during its most critical booking time. About a third of all cruises are reserved during the first three months of the year, a time the industry refers to as wave season.

It hasn’t helped that images of the Concordia, which remains partly submerged off the Tuscan coast are ubiquitous in the news media and on the Internet. “No one wanted Nancy Grace going on TV with a picture of the sunken Concordia, followed by a Carnival ad, ‘fun for all,’ ” said Heidi M. Allison, chief executive of Allison Taylor, a public relations firm that represents various travel companies.

After the Concordia shipwreck, cruise deals on Expedia.com, for example, jumped 60 percent compared with the same time last year. In addition to the reduced deposits and cabin upgrades that Norwegian Cruise Line offered last year during wave season, the company is offering what it calls free balconies — for example, cabins with balconies for the same price as an ocean-view room.

“This is the perfect time to book this year,” said Matthew Lee, vice president for cruises of Travelocity.com, which recently extended its Cruise Super Sale through the end of this month. Travelocity is also offering up to $600 in bonus savings to customers who book a cruise for March through July with an American Express card. But travelers must act fast. Deals “will dry up quickly” as cabins fill up, said Mr. Lee. In fact, Royal Caribbean reports that bookings have already started to recover.

So how do you nab a bargain? Here are some suggestions.

LOOK FOR FLASH SALES AND STEALTH DISCOUNTS

Right now, some of the best deals are being offered in short, last-minute sales bursts or through unadvertised rate cuts. To find them you can check online agencies like Travelocity, the cruise lines’ own Web sites, or CruiseSource.us, which regularly highlights significant deals. Earlier this month, Royal Caribbean listed on its Web site a five-day Presidents’ Day sale. Through May 16, Norway-based Hurtigruten is offering 20 percent off many 12-day sailings (nearly 40 departures) to repeat passengers who have sailed for at least three days in the past three years.

And several cruise lines have quietly introduced so called resident rates, which offer discounts to customers who live in certain states.

“They still want to sell some cabins at full price, so they don’t want to make the group of people getting this lower price too big,” said Rich Tucker, head of business development for CruiseDeals.com in Charlotte, N.C. Carnival, for example, is offering residents in 13 states, including Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania, $130 off the going rate on a seven-night Caribbean sailing on the Carnival Dream departing March 10 from Port Canaveral, Fla., or $649 a person for an ocean-view room.

You can hunt and peck for such online deals on your own by plugging in your state of residence, or you can work with an agent who specializes in cruises to figure out how much you’ll actually save on a particular sailing. One place you can find an agent is CruiseCompete.com, where travelers indicate the cruise they want to take and agents compete to offer them the best deal. You compare the offers in your account, then contact the agent with the best rates directly by phone or e-mail to book.

There are plenty of last-minute opportunities for those interested in a quick Caribbean getaway. A seven-night cruise on Carnival Dream, one of the newest Fun Ships, from Port Canaveral to the eastern Caribbean (Nassau, St Thomas and St. Maarten) was as low as $449 or $64 a person a night for an inside cabin, including free upgrades, according to Travelocity.

CONSIDER EUROPE

Promotions are especially plentiful for European cruises, which took a harder hit to bookings than those in North America did, and where high airfares are forcing cruise lines to offer discounts in order to lure American travelers across the Atlantic. Among the major cruise lines, prices for European trips are down about 12 percent compared with last year, according to Cayole.com, a cruise shopping site. Azamara Club Cruises is offering $1,000 in airfare credit for two passengers booking ocean-view, veranda or club continent suites on European voyages, and $2,000 in airfare credit to customers booking its top suites.

And Europe-bound repositioning cruises — one-way sailings that cruise lines sell at deep discounts when they relocate ships from, say, the Caribbean in the winter to Europe in the spring — are particularly good bargains. Norwegian Epic’s 11-night trans-Atlantic crossing from Miami to Barcelona on April 14, for example, starts at $699 for a balcony stateroom. That’s less than the cheapest one-way flight — $756 on Iberia with a stop in Düsseldorf — found on Kayak.com in a recent search.

One place you won’t find bargains is on European river cruises, which travel agents say continue to fill up fast. Avalon Waterways, for example, reports that bookings are much higher than this time last year for its sailings on the Danube, Rhine and other European rivers. Last year at this time Avalon offered travelers $200 off, per person, versus $150 this year.

DON’T RULE OUT LUXURY CRUISES

Luxury lines continue to slash rates and add perks to get travelers to trade up. “The luxury market is almost in an arms race of who can give more away,” said Mr. Tucker of Cruisedeals.com. Seabourn, for instance, has introduced a “signature package of benefits,” including savings of up to 50 percent, suite upgrades, $1,000 in shipboard credit for premium suites and complimentary pre- or post-cruise hotel stays for guests.

And Crystal Cruises said it would stop charging extra for fine wines, premium spirits and gratuities for housekeeping, bar and dining staff beginning next month. The luxury line is also offering tremendous savings through “book now” fares through Feb. 28, points out Bob Miller, an owner of Cruise Holidays in Alexandria, Va. For instance, the 10-day trans-Atlantic Crystal cruise from Miami to Lisbon, departing March 19, has an ocean-view room starting at $1,360 a person or $136 a person, a day, down from the $4,720 brochure rate.

“This cruise is the lowest-priced Crystal Cruise I have ever seen,” Mr. Miller, said. “The danger is,” once travelers have experienced high-end cruising, he added, “it would be hard to sail on anything less.”

The word “port” tends to come up when cruising is the topic of conversation: embarkation port, disembarkation port, ports of call, home ports, Ports and Bows … and now you can add one more to the list: interports.

Interporting simply means the creation of a secondary embarkation and disembarkation on a cruise. Let’s use this example: A ship home ports out of Miami and is on a seven-day Caribbean and Bahamas cruise. An interport could be Nassau, where passengers would embark and disembark during the cruise, still spending the full seven days cruising by getting off at the same place where they boarded the ship.

Think of it as a second home port. European cruise companies, such as MSC and Costa, have been doing this for years. Interporting was part of the ill-fated Costa Concordia’s schedule, as it had just picked up 600 passengers in Rome (Civitavecchia).

So why interport?

It allows passengers to take the ship from their home city, or one that is closer to home, saving transportation and hotel costs, and it provides the line with new revenues.

It also allows you to pick a destination that may have more pre-and post-cruise interest.

U.S.-based ship Norwegian Epic is planning to interport for the first time, when it spends the summer in Europe this year. NCL’s flagship will interport twice during its seven-day Western Mediterranean cruise that originates in Barcelona, the ship’s European home. Rome (Civitavecchia) and Marseille, France, will be two interports on this cruise.

Of marginal interest for North American passengers will be the interporting planned by Royal Caribbean in the Caribbean next winter.

A seven-day cruise on Brilliance of the Seas, home porting out of San Juan, will interport in Guadeloupe, but that’s geared to accommodate the cruise line’s South American passengers.

Regardless of where you get on, you must stay on board for the seven days.

Interporting could work on back-to-back cruises from New York to stops in New England and Canada. Interports would work, say, out of Quebec City and Halifax, as just one example. Regardless, U.S. ships have an opportunity to follow the Europeans in this growing use of the word “port.”

A few weeks ago, UBS reported in this space that, shortly after the Concordia incident, sales were holding firm. That’s not the case now, according to Bob Iger, CEO of Disney. He says all cruise lines have experienced a decline in bookings.

Cruise lines had been reporting that sales were way ahead of schedule for 2012, and many in the cruise industry expect this downturn to be short-lived, which is why – at the time of writing – I have not seen a massive discounting of product, other than the usual plethora of “Wave Season” sales that are typical at this time of year.

Sadly, it takes an accident to heighten safety concerns. Holland America showed it has kicked it up a notch by escorting a passenger off a ship last week for “non-compliance” during the mandatory muster drill. No reason was given, but you can guess.

THE strong Australian dollar and the chance to grab a bargain brought about 12,000 holiday-seekers to Newcastle Panthers yesterday.

Cheap flights to America, coach trips around Europe and cruises across the Pacific Ocean were popular choices at the Travelworld Holiday and Cruise Expo.

Travelworld spokesman Brett Dann said the strength of the dollar was a major drawcard.

‘‘The dollar and the fact that we offer special deals that people can’t get on any other day stimulates the crowds,’’ he said.

Rebecca Riley, 27, and Belinda Allsopp, 23, went to the expo in search of a cheap cruise.

Mrs Riley said she had been on a few before and thought it was a great way to see the world.

‘‘It’s a great holiday, you get all your accommodation, food and travel wrapped up in one,’’ she said.

‘‘You can go to sleep in Venice and wake up in Dubrovnik.’’

Mrs Riley said she wasn’t put off by the tragedy that struck Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia.

‘‘I went on a cruise that left from Civitavecchia [the same port as the Costa Concordia] and I made it back fine,’’ she said. ‘‘Our captain was really responsible.’’

Add The Doobie Brothers to the list of musical acts heading to sea. The legendary rock band will join Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Simple Man cruise on the 2,394-passenger Norwegian Pearl.

Also onboard the sailing, the sixth annual Southern rock reunion hosted by Lynyrd Skynyrd, will be The Outlaws and a dozen other bands. The four-night cruise embarks from Miami on Oct. 27.

Meanwhile, Norwegian Cruise Line says it has entered into a strategic relationship with the cruise’s producer, Atlanta-based Sixthman, “to work closely developing and delivering high quality music experiences at sea.”

ALSO ONLINE: Mexican port suffers loss of cruise ships
ALSO ONLINE: Tahiti cruise ship undergoes major rehab

In addition to the Simple Man Cruise, Sixthman has produced theme cruises featuring Kiss, Kid Rock, John Mayer, Zac Brown Band, 311, Lyle Lovett, Barenaked Ladies, Sister Hazel and many other performers, often on Carnival ships.

Norwegian was vague about exactly what form the new partnership would take.

“We have been impressed with the range of events Sixthman has produced and believe strongly in this growing segment,” said Norwegian CEO Kevin Sheehan, in a prepared statement. “Sixthman’s expertise and relationships will help us further extend our position as the leader in cruise ship entertainment.”

But Sixthman founder Andy Levine told USA TODAY the cruise line – which brought acts including Blue Man Group and impersonators Legends in Concert to sea on the Norwegian Epic – is especially looking to ramp up entertainment on its new 4,000-passenger ships, Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway, on order for delivery in 2013 and 2014.

“Our dream as a company has been to partner with a cruise line to outfit a ship to meet the needs of the music experience,” Levine said.

He said Sixthman’s role would be to help create a “game-changing strategy” for Norwegian. “You’ll see us work closely with Norwegian for their new ships and help them take a fresh look at programming music across the fleet,” Levine said.

In addition to the Simple Man cruise, the Sixthman-produced second annual KISS Kruise, embarking Oct. 31 from Miami, also is on the Norwegian Pearl.

The agreement with Norwegian is not exclusive, however. Sixthman also will continue to do its music cruises on the ships of other cruise brands, Levine said.
